Preparing for a New Bed Delivery in NZ: What to Measure and Check
Choosing a mattress is the exciting part. Getting it into the bedroom deserves a little planning too.
Whether you're upgrading to a King, moving into a new home or replacing a bed in an upstairs room, a few simple measurements can help avoid surprises on delivery day.
1. Start with the bedroom, not just the mattress size
Measure the room and decide where the bed will sit. Allow practical space for walking around it, opening drawers, accessing wardrobes and making the bed.
If you're moving from a Queen to a King or Super King, don't judge by the size of the old bed alone. Mark the proposed footprint on the floor using masking tape before ordering.
2. Check the whole delivery route
The bedroom door is only one part of the journey. Check:
-
Entrance door and internal doorway clearances
-
Hallway width and tight corners
-
Stair width, headroom and landings
-
Low ceiling areas and awkward turns
-
Lift dimensions if you're in an apartment
Measure usable openings, including obstructions such as handles and handrails. A mattress may be able to move through an opening on its edge, but the route must accommodate its overall dimensions and the room needed to turn it safely.
3. Know whether the mattress and base come in one or two pieces
These are separate considerations. A split base is made in sections, which can be helpful for handling larger sizes. A zipped mattress also divides into two mattress sections.
At Luxury Orthopaedic Beds, our King, Super King and Californian King bases are generally supplied in two sections. A standard mattress may still be one piece unless you've chosen a zipped version.
If access is particularly tight, ask for the dimensions of the individual components before placing the order. A zipped mattress may help in difficult spaces, but it doesn't guarantee that every staircase or doorway will be suitable.
4. Check for stairs and extra handling requirements
If the delivery involves stairs, steep driveways, long carries, difficult parking or limited vehicle access, let the delivery team know in advance. These details can affect labour requirements and any additional charges.
Some delivery routes use a single driver, so assistance may be required. Never assume that room placement, assembly, stair carrying or removal of an old bed is included unless your delivery arrangement specifically confirms it.
5. Decide what will happen to the old bed
Before the new bed arrives, plan how you'll clear the space. If you're keeping the old bed, identify where it will go. If you're arranging removal, confirm who is collecting it, on what date and whether a separate fee applies.
Try not to leave old-bed removal until the delivery vehicle is at your door.
6. Prepare the room and access path
On delivery day, clear shoes, rugs, decorations and small furniture from the route. Protect fragile items, secure pets and make sure someone authorised to receive the delivery is available.
If you've ordered a drawer base or headboard, leave room for its assembly and final positioning. Check that all selected details—size, comfort feel, base colour, leg height and optional headboard—match your order confirmation.
7. Plan bedding and protection ahead of time
Have appropriately sized bedding ready so you can use the bed once it is installed. Check your fitted sheet depth, especially if the mattress differs from your previous one.
If you want to qualify for Luxury Orthopaedic Beds' 60-Night Comfort Guarantee, the specified waterproof, breathable mattress protector must be purchased from us on the same invoice as the mattress and used throughout the qualifying period. Other terms and conditions apply; check the current policy before ordering.
How delivery works with Luxury Orthopaedic Beds
We offer delivery throughout New Zealand. Many orders are delivered in approximately 2–5 days, although timing depends on the product, location, route and availability; South Island and made-to-order deliveries can take longer.
The delivery week is generally confirmed on Monday, and drivers usually call around an hour before arrival. Please check the arrangements supplied for your individual order, particularly if stairs or additional assistance are involved.
