What Is Mattress Edge Support and Why Does It Matter?
What Is Mattress Edge Support?
When people compare mattresses, most of the attention goes to the middle of the bed.
But there's another part of the mattress you use constantly:
The Edge:
Edge support describes how stable the perimeter of a mattress feels when you sit or lie close to it.
Some mattresses feel reasonably supportive through the centre but noticeably softer as you move toward the side.
Why Does Edge Support Matter?
Think about all the ways you use the perimeter of your mattress.
You may sit on it while:
putting on shoes,
getting dressed,
standing up,
or getting into bed.
And if you share your bed with another person, you may regularly sleep closer to the side than someone sleeping alone.
A more stable perimeter can make more of the mattress surface feel comfortably usable.
How Do Mattress Manufacturers Create Edge Support?
There is more than one method.
Some mattresses use reinforced springs around the perimeter.
Others use foam around the edge of the spring system.
All-foam mattresses depend on the construction of the foam itself.
So simply hearing that a mattress contains pocket springs doesn't tell you whether its perimeter has been reinforced.
What Is Foam-Encased Edge Support?
Foam encasement surrounds the perimeter of the mattress support core with supportive foam.
At Luxury Orthopaedic Beds, our Orthopaedic Merino Mattress features foam-encased edge support around the spring system.
Its role is to create additional stability around the perimeter.
Does Edge Support Make the Whole Mattress Firmer?
Not necessarily.
This is another example of why mattress terminology matters.
Edge stability isn't the same thing as surface firmness.
Our Orthopaedic Merino Mattress retains its perimeter construction while being available in:
Soft
Medium
Firm
and
Extra Firm.
Is Edge Support More Important for Couples?
It can become more noticeable.
Two people sharing a Queen, for example, have less individual width than two people sharing a King or Super King.
If the mattress feels stable near its sides, sleepers may feel more comfortable using a greater portion of the available surface.
That doesn't mean edge support can replace choosing an appropriately sized mattress.
But it can affect how usable that size feels.
What About Sitting on the Edge?
A mattress edge will naturally compress when someone places their entire body weight on a small area.
The goal isn't for the mattress to behave like a wooden bench.
The question is whether it feels reasonably stable and controlled.
How Should You Test Edge Support?
Sit naturally on the edge.
Don't just press it with your hand.
Then lie in your normal sleeping position and move closer to the perimeter.
Ask:
Do I still feel secure?
Does the edge feel dramatically different from the rest of the bed?
Would I be comfortable sleeping here?
The Bottom Line
Edge support isn't the most exciting mattress feature to talk about.
But it can be one of the features you notice every single day.
When comparing mattresses, don't only ask:
“What's in the middle?”
Also ask:
“How is the perimeter supported?”
